“I’m interested in notions of space and time, identity and the collective experience. My practice explores how personal experiences and memory shape our understanding of the world. All of this resonates with how Artis encourages children to think about their own identities and sense of belonging in the classroom. I also focus on in-between connecting spaces, and just like the interdisciplinary approach nurtured at Artis, we’re all about making meaningful connections across themes.”
Do Ho Suh (born 1962 in Seoul, Korea) is a contemporary artist known for his large-scale installations exploring concepts of home, identity, memory and displacement. He studied sculpture at Yale University, painting at the Rhode Island School of Design, and Korean painting at Seoul National University. His intricate sculptures traverse themes of collectivity and individuality, public and private space. Do Ho’s work continually questions the identity of the individual in today’s increasingly global society, stemming from his personal experiences of transcultural displacement.
